PerSys Medical Introduces “First Aid for Firearms” Training Course

Gun owners learn life-saving techniques through this uniquely designed course.

As part of the Bill of Rights, the second amendment to the United States Constitution protects the right of the people to keep and bear arms. With this right comes great responsibility. PerSys Medical is committed to the education of responsible firearm owners by hosting their First Aid for Firearms course on July 31, 2012 that will be taught by industry-leading expert Van Postell.

June is National Safety Month, and as part of its safety initiative, PerSys Medical is offering a four-hour course called First Aid for Firearms. This course is designed for any civilian who is interested in learning how to treat victims of trauma. “With approximately 500,000 gunshot wounds every year in the United States, learning to tend to those wounds while waiting for emergency responders to arrive could save a life” said Van Postell, First Aid For Firearms instructor. The course will focus primarily on stopping hemorrhaging (rapid blood loss) which is the leading cause of death related to gunshot wounds. The course will also cover the different types and stages of an emergency, shooting range incidents, home-related incidents, rapid injury assessment, bleeding management, and first aid kits. Upon completion of this class, each student will receive a first aid kit containing an Emergency Bandage®, SOF® Tactical Tourniquet, and gloves.

Van Postell is a Captain for the City of Houston Fire Department where he has served for 10 years. He is also a commissioned Reserve Deputy with the Harris County Sheriff’s office and holds the rank of Sergeant over the Tactical Medical Division. He began his EMS career in 1994 in San Antonio, Tx and has been a Paramedic involved in 911 response for 16 years. Van attended the International School of Tactical Medicine in Palm Springs, CA, and also participated in other tactical medical trainings such as Basic SWAT and Tactical Combat Casualty Care. In addition, Van holds instructor certifications associated with the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP), Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCLEOSE), and the Texas Department of Health (TDHS).
